Delhi, India’s capital territory, is also known for its people with happy hearts and dynamic nature. A symbol of the country’s rich past and thriving present, Delhi is a city where ancient and modern blend seamlessly together and stands as one of the fastest developing cities in the world. Bodhgaya, a placid place echoing with the calmness and intense devotion is the birthplace of Buddhism. Inundated with several temples and monasteries, the 2500-year-old town invites tourists from all over the globe.

Day 3

Discover Bodhgaya

Today we will explore all the major Buddhist sites starting from Mahabodhi Temple & Bodhi Tree, the UNESCO World Heritage site, which is one of the 4 holy sites related to the life of Lord Buddha, particularly to his enlightenment. The first temple was built by Emperor Ashoka- ‘The Great’ in the 3rd century BC but the present temple complex is from the 5th century. One of the oldest Buddhist sites has the direct descendent of the Bodhi Tree under which Prince Siddharth attained enlightenment. Great Buddha Statue, graced by the presence of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the unveiling and consecration of the 80-foot Buddha Statue took place at Bodhgaya in 1989 It is the ultimate symbol and divinity and holiness. Cankamana is one of the most sacred and must-see places,where Lord Buddha moved up and down in deep contemplation after the enlightenment. Buddha’s lotus footprints are beautifully decorated and continually praised by chanting giving a soothing and surreal environment. Thai Monastery, out of several monasteries in Bodhgaya, the Thai monastery stands out for its exceptional architecture and mesmerizing beauty with a sloping roof and golden tiles that houses a 25-meter-high bronze statue of Lord Buddha. Conclude your sightseeing with a visit to the Chinese Temple Bodhgaya, the stunning piece of architecture built by the Chinese Monks close to the Bodhi Temple houses 200 years 200-year-old Buddha Statue brought from China and placed as a sacred shrine. The temple also has three Buddha Statues of Gold and displays Chinese architectural style, scripture, and designs.

Day 4

Travel to Patna via Rajgir and Nalanda en route

After breakfast, check out and travel to Patna (Approx. 04 to 05 1⁄2 hrs. drive). En route visit Rajgir, an ancient royal city surrounded by 7 hills that served as the capital of the Magadh empire till the 5th century BC. Visit the famous Griddhhakuta Hills, the place where Gautam Buddha preached many inspiring sermons to the disciples and is one of the most impressive locations of the Buddhist trail. Japanese Stupa or Vishva Shanti Stupa is a white marble dome dedicated to Lord Buddha. Also stop at Nalanda to visit Nalanda University, one of the most prominent learning centers of ancient India with the world-renowned university. Present among the ruins, the Stupa of Sariputra was built by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd Century BC. Later Continue your travel to Patna, an ancient city sprawling along the south bank of the Ganges River, once known as Patliputra, the capital of Bihar state. Upon arrival, check-in at the hotel and spend the rest of your time at leisure.

Day 5

Travel to Kushinagar visiting Vaishali enroute

This morning, we travel to Kushinagar (Approx. 05 to 06 hrs. drive) visiting Vaishali en route. It was the first place that Buddha visited after leaving home and gave his last sermon at Kolhu. Here we explore the only complete Ashoka Pillar and Stupas where the ashes of Lord Buddha are preserved in stone casket. Continue your drive to Kushinagar, an important Buddhist pilgrimage site, where Lord Buddha is believed to have attained the ‘Parinirvan’ after his death. Upon arrival at Kushinagar, visit Ramabhar Stupa, thelarge stupa rises to the height of 15 meters and is situated 1.5 km from the Mahapaninirvana Temple, marking the site where Lord Buddha was cremated. It is referred to as Mukut-Bandhan Chaitya in ancient Buddhist texts. Later check-in at the hotel and spend the rest of your time at leisure.

Day 6

Explore the sites of Kushinagar and travel to Lumbini

Early morning, enjoy meditation in Meditation Park, one of the most beautiful, serene, and green places of Kushinagar and is a perfect place to heal the body and mind. Return to the hotel for breakfast. Later, check out and visit Nirvana Temple, one of the most frequented shrines of Buddhism. Being the place where Lord Buddha attained Nirvana evokes deep emotions in every Buddhist. The temple houses a reclining 6-meter statue unearthed in 1876 excavations. The huge brickwork Stupa stands on a 2.74 meters high plinth and its top is 19.81m above the ground level. Later, continue your travel to Lumbini, Nepal (Approx. 04 hrs. drive), one of the world’s most important Buddhist sites, Lumbini is the birthplace of Lord Buddha and is frequented by spiritual solace seekers and general travellers from around the world. Day 7

Explore the Buddhist sites of Lumbini

This morning, enjoy the full day sightseeing of Lumbini starting with Maya Devi Temple and the Pond, the place where Maya Devi gave birth to Prince Siddharth (who later renounced the world and became Gautam Buddha) and the nearby pond is referred to as the place where the infant prince and his mother were washed by divinities. Bodhi Tree, located within Maya Devi Temple Complex, adjacent to the shrines on the bank of the pond, where Buddhist monks are often found sitting and chanting the scriptures or simply meditating. People there believe that the tree makes wishes will come true if they pray while tying a ribbon on the Bodhi Tree. Great Drigung Lotus Stupa, a religiously important and truly extravagant site Stupa, houses a partly covered hollow crown in the glass revealing Buddha’s statue, was built by the German Tara Foundation. Lumbini Museum, built in the 1970s and renovated by architects from Taiwan, the Lumbini museum is located inside the premises of the UNESCO World Heritage Site- The Sacred Gardens. While it generally provides research facilities for the study of Buddhism, the museum also houses more than 12,000 artefacts and relics from the Mauryan and Khusana Dynasty. Conclude your sightseeing with a visit to Thrangu Vajra Vidya Monastery, dedicated to Thrangu Rinpoche, who sternly believed in Buddha’s teachings of peace, knowledge, and unity; the monastery is one of the institutions that actively supports education in Nepal. The monastery now has several students dedicating their lives to the path of Buddha.

Day 8

Drive to Shravasti visiting Kapilavastu enroute

Early morning after a filling breakfast, travel to Shravasti (Approx. 04 hrs to 05 hrs. drive) visiting the Kapilavastu enroute, where Gautam Buddha spent his entire childhood. Later continue your travel to Shravasti, near the west of the Rapti River, an important religious centre for both- Buddhism and Jainism. Upon arrival, check-in at the hotel and relax for some time. Later visit Miracle Stupa, where Lord Buddha spent considerable time after attaining enlightenment. The stupa was erected to commemorate the teachings and sermons of Lord Buddha in Shravasti. Jetavana Monastery is the place where the Buddha gave most of his teachings and discourses and stayed for the longest period than any other monastery. Conclude your day with a visit to the Anandha Bodhi Tree, under the direction of Ananda - the primary attendant of Lord Buddha, a seed from the Bodhi tree of Bodhgaya was planted near Jetavana Monastery.
